Center of Gravity and Elevon Deflections

Nose ballast between 1.5 and 2.0 ounces is typically needed to meet the desired CG location.  Putting the CG further aft gives slightly better performance, but forward CG is more forgiving.  The CG should be 1.5" or more, forward of the trailing edge, for the first flight.   Use of expo and dual rates is recommended to reduce pitch sensitivity.

CG on the Z1 is measured from the trailing edge, along the centerline.  Elevon deflection is measured at the trailing edge of the elevon on the side of the elevon closest to the wing centerline, as shown to the right.

 

Typical elevon deflections

Roll: + 1.0 cm, -1.0 cm

Pitch: +0.9 cm, -0.9 cm

Roll+Pitch: +1.5 cm, -1.5 cm

Trimming for full flaps: -0.1 cm (depends on flap arrangement, test at high altitude)

 

 

Elevon deflections with increased roll-rate

Roll: + 1.5 cm, -1.5 cm

Pitch: +0.9 cm, -0.9 cm

Roll+Pitch: +1.5 cm, -1.5 cm

(with some programmable radios (Spectrum), roll deflection can be increased by mixing roll with roll)

CG at 1" (2.54cm) forward from the trailing edge

Typical ballast: 0.0 ounces

Elevon deflection at trim: 0.0 mm   -2.0 mm

Static margin: 6%

Flying qualities:  Very sensitive in pitch.  Little warning before stall.  Reduce pitch travel at least 50% or use exponential. Not a recommended CG location for the first flight.

 

CG at 1.25" (3.2cm) forward from the trailing edge

Typical ballast: 1.0 ounces

Elevon deflection at trim: 1.0 mm  -1.0 mm

Static Margin: 9%

Flying qualities:  Nice.  Good warning (pitch nod) before stall.

 

CG at 1.5" (3.8cm) forward from the trailing edge

Typical ballast: 2.0 ounces

Elevon deflection at trim: 2.0 mm   0.0 mm

Static Margin: 12%

Flying qualities:  Nice, very stable.

 

CG at 1.75" (4.4cm) forward from the trailing edge

Typical ballast: 3.0 ounces

Elevon deflection at trim: 3.0 mm  1.0 mm

Static Margin: 16%

Flying qualities:  Very easy.  Pitch inputs have a very soft response.

 

Getting the pitch trimmed out for your CG location can take a little trial and error.  First flights should be a light toss into the wind over grass (tall grass if available).

Pitch Trim

If you aren't using the throttle stick for the flaps, it can be used for making quick pitch-trim adjustments.  Here is an example:

 

Left stick forward, elevon deflection: 0.0 mm   -1.5 mm, fast flight between thermals

Left stick middle: elevon deflection: 1.5 mm   0.0 mm, typical flying mode

Left stick back: elevon deflection: 3.0 mm   1.0 mm, trim setting once the Z1 is banked up into a thermal

 

Pitch Trim with Flaps

 Flaps can be mixed with the elevons to eliminate any unwanted changes in pitch trim created by the flaps.  Typical mix required needed is around 10%-15% down elevator.

 

Snap Flaps

Small flap deflections can be linked to pitch inputs to increase the lift generated in turns and loops.
